Coaches' and volunteers' code of conduct

What the club asks of its coaches, team managers and volunteers.

Draft for the committee to approve

These words have been drafted for the club and are waiting for the committee to check them.

Everyone who coaches, manages a team or helps with juniors agrees to this code. It follows the ECB's Safe Hands policy.

Your checks and training

  • Hold a current ECB DBS check if your role needs one, and keep it up to date through the Update Service.
  • Complete the safeguarding training your role needs, and renew it before it expires.
  • Keep your first aid and coaching qualifications current. The club reminds you six weeks before anything expires.

Working with juniors

  • Put the welfare of every child first.
  • Follow the ECB's ratios and the Rule of Two: never be alone with a child out of sight of other adults.
  • Never message a junior one-to-one. Use the club's system, which sends junior messages to parents.
  • Follow the ECB's safety rules for under-18s: fast bowling limits, fielding distances and helmets, all by the player's actual age on the day.
  • Only put a junior into adult cricket once they're 12 or over on the day, with parental consent countersigned by the Club Safeguarding Officer.
  • Never use a child's name with their photo.

Running sessions

  • Take a register at every session, and check medical notes and emergency contacts before you start.
  • Plan sessions that are safe, inclusive and fun, for every ability.
  • Record any injury in the injury log and tell the parent.

Raising concerns

If you're worried about a child, or about an adult's behaviour, tell the Club Safeguarding Officer straight away. If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 first.
